Just buying any rucksack will not do when it comes to your children, obviously they have their own tastes, comfort and preferences that one must consider while purchasing a rucksack. Of course as a parent you need to give importance to other factors such as durability, comfort and safety features while buying a rucksack, which children in general do not. They are attracted to favourite colours, animations and designs.

The first thing to consider before buying a kids’ rucksack is that there are different designs and colours to choose from and although there are girls rucksacks and boys rucksacks this is not cast in stone when it comes to choosing that unusual girls gift or special boys gift.

It would be great to have a stylish rucksack; however, avoid buying those with a character theme even if your child insists on one; chances are that your child may ask for another character as something new is brought out. A generic rucksack with decent colours and good zip runners and zips would do. Ensure that the dimensions are perfect for a child to carry; something around 9 to 12 inches would be ideal.

Also to avoid your child getting back ache, it is worth considering the size of the rucksack to avoid back ache. Adjustability shouldn’t be overlooked when you are buying kids rucksacks. The bag should come with straps that can be adjusted and the child can customize according to the weight he/she is carrying and also to distribute the weight accordingly. Children’s health care practitioners recommend that the weight of the bag a child carries should be about 20% of their body weight and no more than that.

The considerations when you buy a kids rucksack can be listed as follows:

  • Compression straps are a must as it helps while packing.
  • Look for rucksacks that are totally waterproof.
  • Padded back and adjustable straps will ensure that the weight of the bag does not hurt the back of your children.
  • Sufficient storage space that includes side pockets to store all that you need to carry.
  • A padded waistband or a hip belt on the rucksack is also useful for equal weight distribution especially while trekking.
  • There are plenty of choices in the market for buying rucksacks and therefore you should consider your children’s age and size to ensure you buy the right one.
